In a delightful twist of royal history, it appears that Princess Catherine and Prince William had a playful side when it came to keeping their romance under wraps.
According to Robert Jobson’s new book, “Catherine, the Princess of Wales,” the couple adopted some rather amusing pseudonyms during their university days at St Andrews to evade prying eyes while enjoying their time together.
Back in the early 2000s, when love was blossoming between the two, they shared a cozy off-campus living arrangement with two fellow students.
Whenever the couple craved a little escape from their academic responsibilities, Prince William would whisk Catherine away to serene getaways like Highgrove or Sandringham, and even to a quaint cottage nestled on the Balmoral Estate.
This charming getaway routine, as detailed by Jobson, painted a picture of young love amidst the backdrop of royal life.
However, their escapades didn’t stop at private estates.
The couple also checked into hotels, adopting the names Mr. and Mrs. Smith.
While this might have seemed clever, it’s likely that their ruse didn’t fool anyone familiar with the royal couple.
Interestingly, this period coincided with the release of the 2005 film “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” where Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt famously met and fell in love.
But it seems that William and Catherine weren’t drawing inspiration from Hollywood; they graduated in 2005, meaning their hotel antics predated the film’s debut.
The name Mr. Smith wasn’t the only alias that Prince William employed to dodge the spotlight.
In 2001, the same year he began his university adventure, he used the name Steve to maintain a low profile.
Jobson humorously notes that it was a rather half-hearted attempt, but Kate was right there with him, playing along to help him achieve a slice of normalcy amid the relentless media attention.
Their knack for pseudonyms didn’t end with Mr. and Mrs. Smith.
In another romantic getaway to the Seychelles, during a pivotal moment in their relationship in 2007, they chose the names Martin and Rose Middleton.
This trip marked a significant turning point as they reconciled after a brief split earlier that year.
It was a week filled with rekindled affection, as noted by author Andrew Morton in his biography of the couple.
Morton elaborates that it was during this idyllic vacation that the couple reached a mutual understanding about their future.
