The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Harry and Meghan, have been met with a significant setback as the UK Parliament has voted to remove their royal titles in response to the launch of their new website, Sussex.com.
Unveiled on Monday, the website showcases a royal coat of arms and identifies as “The Office of Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.”
Additionally, it provides links to the couple’s non-profit organization, the Archwell Foundation, and their production company, Archwell Productions.
The debut of the website has stirred controversy and disapproval among numerous royal enthusiasts and commentators who have accused the Sussexes of capitalizing on their royal standing and violating the terms of their agreement with the royal family when they stepped back as senior royals in 2020.
The backlash escalated swiftly as the UK Parliament engaged in a heated debate on Tuesday regarding a motion to amend the 1917 Titles Deprivation Act, which empowers the Privy Council to revoke an individual’s title or honor due to treason, felony, or misconduct.
Conservative MP Bob Seeley spearheaded the motion, asserting that the Sussexes had transgressed the Act by leveraging their titles and the royal coat of arms for commercial gains and by compromising the dignity and integrity of the Crown and the royal family.
The motion contended, “This House believes that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have forfeited their right to use their titles and the royal coat of arms by engaging in activities that are incompatible with the values and traditions of the monarchy and by causing damage and embarrassment to the institution of the Crown and the reputation of the United Kingdom.”
With a majority of 99 votes in favor, supported by 312 MPs and opposed by 213 MPs, the motion received government backing, emphasizing the Sussexes’ perceived lack of respect and appreciation towards the Queen and the nation.
The government condemned the couple’s website as a breach of trust and protocol.
The Privy Council is now tasked with making the final decision on whether to strip Harry and Meghan of their titles, with a meeting scheduled for next week and an imminent verdict announcement.
Despite the Parliament’s decision, the Sussexes have refrained from issuing a direct response.
However, sources close to them disclosed feelings of shock, hurt, and anger towards the Parliament’s ruling, expressing sentiments of betrayal and abandonment by their homeland.
The couple remains resolute in their stance, adamant about retaining both their website and titles, and are prepared to defend their rights and autonomy.
The sources conveyed, “Harry and Meghan are devastated by this decision, which they perceive as a personal affront and retribution for their authenticity and lifestyle choices.
They have diligently cultivated their brand and platform and are steadfast in their refusal to yield to the Parliament’s demands.
