Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, is reportedly relieved and pleased with her new title bestowed upon her by King Charles.
Last Friday, King Charles granted Sophie and her husband, Prince Edward, the titles of the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, elevating Sophie to the same rank as Meghan.
A close friend of the couple shared with the Daily Mail that Sophie is relieved she no longer has to curtsy to a family member who not only abandoned RoL duties but also spent the past three years criticizing the institution that Sophie has tirelessly supported.
It is important to note that Royal Highnesses generally do not bow or curtsy to other Royal Highnesses, except to His Majesty.
The Queen had promised Edward and Sophie that they would receive these titles before her passing, and now Charles has fulfilled her wishes, coinciding with Edward’s 59th birthday.
This title was previously held by Edward’s late father, Prince Philip.
As a result of this promotion, their 15-year-old son James will assume the title of Earl of Wessex.
However, their daughter, Lady Louise Windsor, will retain her current title.
The new Duchess of Edinburgh has been actively engaged in official Royal duties, surpassing both the Prince and Princess of Wales and the Queen Consort Camilla in terms of engagements in 2022, with a total of 158.
Sophie has dedicated 21 years to serving the Royals since her marriage to Prince Edward in 1999.
In an interview with The Telegraph in 2021, Sophie recounted the day when Prince Philip expressed his desire for the title to be passed on to them following their engagement.
She described the moment, saying, “We sat there slightly stunned.
He literally came straight in and said, ‘Right.
I’d like it very much if you would consider that.'”
For Edward, this was a bittersweet moment, as he knew that the title could only be bestowed upon him after the passing of both his parents.
Notably, Edward was the only one of Philip’s children whose birth he attended, and his youngest son was said to be his favorite.
Sophie also had a close relationship with Prince Philip, which brought relief to Queen Elizabeth.
Royal author Ingrid Seward previously shared with the Sunday Times that Sophie got along very well with Philip, and the Queen found this to be a source of comfort.
Female members of the royal family possessed a unique ability to handle Philip, making him laugh and not being intimidated by his directness.
Sophie, in particular, refused to allow him to bully her.
Her positive rapport with the Duke of Edinburgh has endeared her to the rest of the firm, with Queen Elizabeth considering her like a second daughter.
Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, can now embrace her new title with a sense of relief and pride.
