It seems that the Prime Minister may soon face a difficult decision regarding Prince Harry’s invitation to the upcoming coronation of King Charles.
Following the uproar caused by his autobiography, royal insiders suggest that King Charles should invoke the so-called Churchill Precedent, which would transfer the responsibility of inviting Harry to Chancellor Rishi Sunak.
This precedent was previously used in 1953 when Winston Churchill, then Prime Minister, informed the Duke of Windsor that he would not be welcome at Queen Elizabeth’s Coronation.
As of now, Prince Harry has not confirmed whether he would attend the ceremony on May 6th, even if he were invited.
Without external intervention, King Charles will be left with a challenging choice: either exclude his son from the event or risk turning it into a media spectacle by allowing Harry and Meghan to attend.
According to a source from the Mail on Sunday, the coronation is a state-funded event, and as such, the decision to invite Harry, who holds no official royal role and has no state function at the ceremony, will ultimately fall to the government rather than solely his father.
However, insiders from Whitehall suggest that traditionally, the royal household provides a list of royal guests without disclosing their identities, and the arrangements are made based on this information.
Mr.
Gross, a royal expert, also mentioned to Express that it is expected for most core members of the royal family to be invited.
Considering Harry’s status as a designated stand-in, it would be unusual if he were not included.
Nevertheless, the Cabinet Office is forming a coronation committee consisting of civil servants, royal officials, and representatives from the Church of England to plan the event, with the Home Office playing a significant role as well.
If Prince Harry does attend the coronation, there will be heightened security concerns due to his previous claims of killing 25 Taliban fighters during his military service in Afghanistan.
Additionally, it has been reported that Prince Charles is furious with his son, particularly regarding the allegations made against Camilla.
The situation remains uncertain, and it’s unclear whether Harry and Meghan will ultimately be allowed to attend King Charles’ coronation.
