Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were allegedly convinced to leave the royal family after seeing a photo featuring Prince George, according to author Andrew Morton.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex reportedly believed that the firm was conspiring against them even before an official snapshot of the Queen and her heirs was released.
The picture, taken in the throne room of Buckingham Palace, depicted the late Queen Elizabeth alongside King Charles, Prince William, and a six-year-old Prince George.
It was published at the beginning of 2020, just days before Harry and Meghan announced their plan to step down as working royals.
Morton claims that this photo served as a wake-up call for the couple, pushing them to make their final decision.
Although the picture appeared to simply represent the future of the monarchy and resembled many historic portraits, it allegedly caused turmoil behind the scenes.
In his book “Meghan, A Hollywood Princess,” Morton wrote that Harry and Meghan suspected that the entire situation was working against them.
They believed that the evidence was all around them, and the unwritten code was clear: the future of the monarchy would prevail, with or without their presence.
According to Morton, their fears were confirmed when Harry canceled a meeting with the Queen to discuss his royal future.
The author suggests that this incident reinforced their belief that they held a lower position on the royal totem pole, despite their international popularity.
Harry had arranged to have a private conversation with the Queen in early January, but the meeting was postponed at the last minute due to concerns about internal politics.
The family worried that anything agreed upon during the formal conversation could be used by Harry as a negotiating tactic.
In a recent interview with the Mirror podcast “Pod Save the King,” Morton disclosed that Harry and Meghan had contemplated leaving the royal family earlier than the public realized.
Their discussions began just six months after their wedding, during a conversation Morton had with Oprah Winfrey in a London hotel in 2018.
This revelation highlights that the couple had been considering a different path from an early stage.
Ironically, they had been given the role of youth ambassador to William and Catherine, which symbolized the Queen’s intention for them to focus on the rest of the world while leaving behind the obligations of the royal family in the UK, where they would eventually become heads of state.
In January 2020, the couple officially announced their decision to step back from Buckingham Palace.
Their statement acknowledged months of reflection and internal discussions, stating their intention to transition into a new progressive role within the institution.
They expressed their desire to become financially independent while continuing to support the Queen.
The couple planned to divide their time between the UK and North America, raising their son with an appreciation for royal tradition while also focusing on their new charitable entity.
At the time, a Buckingham Palace spokeswoman responded by stating that discussions with Harry and Meghan were still in the early stages.
She acknowledged their desire for a different approach but emphasized the complexity of the issues that needed to be addressed.
As for the speculation surrounding Meghan’s motives, some suggest that she may be jealous of the Cambridge coronation role, leading her to try to humiliate them before the coronation.
