The latest season of the popular Netflix series, The Crown, delves into the life of Prince Harry, depicting him as someone who constantly seeks solace in alcohol and battles with feelings of jealousy towards his older brother, Prince William.
In the final six episodes of the hit royal show, aptly titled “Wills Mania,” viewers get an insight into the slightly different ways the two princes grieved the loss of their mother, Princess Diana.
During his time at Eton College, a young Prince William was summoned to his housemaster’s office to discuss attending official events in honor of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip’s golden wedding anniversary in 1997.
At one of these events, Prince Harry, portrayed by Luther Ford, mischievously filled two teacups with champagne for himself and his elder brother.
With a hint of sarcasm, he remarked, “Well, this is a riot.
I filled it with champagne.
Come on, you know you want to.”
It’s important to note that Harry would have been just 13 years old at the time.
In a later scene set during a trip to Canada in 1998, Harry offered his brother alcohol in their hotel room, asking whether he preferred a gin and tonic or whiskey.
William simply opted for a beer.
At the time, Prince Harry, the current Prince of Wales, would have been a mere 15 years old.
As they raised their glasses, Harry made a heartfelt toast, saying, “To mummy.”
These scenes shed light on the Duke of Sussex’s struggles with alcohol and drugs after the tragic loss of his mother.
In a candid interview with Anderson Cooper on 60 Minutes earlier this year, Prince Harry opened up about his battles with substance abuse.
He revealed, “It was obvious to us as kids the British press played a part in our mother’s misery, and I had a lot of anger inside of me that luckily, I never expressed to anybody.
But I resorted to drinking heavily because I wanted to numb the feeling or distract myself from whatever I was thinking.
And I would, you know, resort to drugs as well.”
Apart from his struggles with addiction, The Crown also portrays Prince Harry as being envious of the attention his brother receives from girls.
During a conversation about their upcoming trip to Canada, Harry tells William that their father, King Charles, assured him that they would “shut the place down” to keep the girls away.
